So, what is Facebook and how does it relate to Woolvett bros website?

Facebook is a social networking site, a place where people
can share information and re-discover past friends or work colleagues, or catch up with and keep in touch with family home or abroad.  It's the latest in the rising trend first made popular by 'Friends Reunited' and more recently by 'Myspace', and is one of the most rapidly growing communities on the internet today.

The Woolvett bros group that has been set up was created because Facebook offers a nice and easy to use environment and a safe solution for online interaction.  However, as with anything it's always a little daunting to sign up for something with no real idea what you are actually signing up for, so please take a moment to review this guide that will hopefully encourage you to not only sign up, but to join the Woolvett bros group.

Creating an account

  • Clicking on the link above will take you to a login page, select the option to 'register for Facebook'
  • Follow the prompts to sign up for a free account, remembering that Facebook is the safest social networking sites on the web and this is because it tries to stop people signing up with false identities, if you don't to use your true identity there are ways around it (use your imagination) but Facebook is fundementaily a means for your to keep in touch with, and rediscover old friendships so this is why it does encourage you to use your real name.  You do have FULL control over what information people can see or respond to, Facebook protects and respects your privacy and gives you the power to determine who can contact you, if anyone (you can make it that people can see your name only, and have no means of contacting you) - see more below about these settings.
  • Once you have done the initial registration you will be prompted to create/add to your personal profile.
  • Only share information you are happy to share and when prompted select 'friends only' on your profile details.

Privacy Settings (IMPORTANT)

Once you have set yourself up with an account, and filled in what you wish to on your profile page you need to then go to the top right hand corner and select the 'Privacy' option in the menu located there.

On the Privacy menu you will find five menu items that determines your Facebook privacy settings.  Please read on to discover which settings you can amend to ensure you enjoy a safe experience with Facebook.

  • Profile - In this section you can determine WHO sees your profile, you can select from 'only my friends', 'some of my networks, and all of my friends', or 'All of my networks and all of my friends' - it is advised to keep the default setting of 'only my friends'.
You can also amend your Profile feature privacys, all set to 'only my friends' default, but if you wish to share with your networks or everyone, you have the option.
Contact Info and Applications can also be changed here, with the default being as above, as 'only my friends'.
*tip* if you truly only want to join the Woolvett bros group and simply wish no one to see anything, other than your listed name, then quite simply do not 'add' any friends to your account.  By becoming a member of Woolvett bros, it's members DO NOT automatically become your friend and they will not be able to see your profile or contact you outside of the group.

  • Search -  A great option that allows you to determine if your name shows up in any searches, you can select to be found by everyone (all users of Facebook) or just your friends (so if you take the above tip, that would be no one can find you).
Make sure you also tick the options at the bottom of this page that if you allow someone to find you in a search, you can further determine what they can see by selecting the tick boxes next to 'see your picture', 'send you a message', 'poke you', 'add you as a friend' and 'view your friend list' - a very cool feature to protect your privacy.

  • News Feed and Mini Feed - select which information in your profile you wish people to see about your own activities on Facebook - whether it's signing someone's wall or posting a message to a group - if you don't want the world to know your every move then simply un-tick the boxes.

  • Poke, Message and Friend Request - Fully control what people can see when they have temporary access to your profile.  You grant temporary access to your profile by sending someone a message, poking them or requesting to add them as a friend.  There is a preview of your profile page that allows you to see, once you've ticked or un-ticked boxes, what your temporary profile looks like.

  • Applications - simply gives you the chance to remove any applications you may have added to your account, that appears on your profile page.

Under the five privacy sections you will see the ability to block people simply by adding their name into the box, they will then appear on a list below.  You can also give limited access to some people in viewing your profile, using the box on the right hand side.

Hopefully the above gives you a good start in using Facebook, and I hope to see you at the Woolvett bros group soon!
