Open Mike Music at the West Town Bar and Grill with Jaimz Woolvett

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

"I arrived at the restaurant just after 8:30pm with a feeling of excitement and anticipation. There were only a dozen or so people at first; it was early. Desultory conversation filled the restaurant and a few of the musicians stood outside talking and working out their nervousness. At about 11:30pm, one of the waitresses who knew why I was there, came over, smiling, and whispered, 'They're here.' (they being Jaimz and his father) I went over and introduced myself to Mr. Woolvett; we had spoken beforehand on the phone. He was gracious and kind. I turned at his direction and there was Jaimz, with the classic Woolvett smile and a welcoming expression on his face. I admit I was flustered and a little overwhelmed. He kindly teased me to put me at ease. I asked him if I could videotape his set and he agreed. I was stunned when he suddenly suggested that we go outside to do the video where it was quieter. There, in the parking lot of the restaurant in the quiet of a city at midnight, Jaimz did his set. As he quietly strummed his guitar, you could see him slowly losing himself in the music, his face moving expressively to the words and feelings. It was so cool to watch. As he ended, there was a moment of stillness, then he opened his eyes and smiled. We went back in to a full house. The noise barely abated as he did his set, though there was much applause as it ended. Jaimz plays for the joy of the music and helps others showcase the grassroots talent of the city he loves. Wow, what a night!"
